Stream Report 3/7/2023

Forecast: 42℉, 12 mph gusty wind, high clouds

Stream Conditions: clear/normal levels, water temp was 46℉

Insect Hatching Activity: Midge

We're back. It was another beautiful late Winter Day on the Driftless streams. So many signs tell us that Winter is relinquishing her grip on the season - Candian Geese pairing up, many robins all along the stream especially near the feeder springs, and the greening up of the watercress along the creeks. It's exciting to see the streams come alive and to anticipate all the great flyfishing to come with the Spring hatches and summer terrestrials; however successful enjoyment on the Driftless streams is an all-year event, as today so clearly shown, with many trout relishing the feast of midges and caddis pupas. Many were colored with their dark golden Winter hues while others were bright and silvery. All were great wild fighters. More snow is forecast in the next several days as Winter tries to hang on, but we all know that the day light is getting longer and stronger. The beauty of the Driftless in Springtime is hard to beat and it's right around the corner.

I observed the area and could see a faint ripple coming out of the foam. I still had the emerger on and made a cast to the area of the rise and was greeted by a resounding battle and eventually landed a beautiful 15” brown which I affectionately labeled the blue cheek fatty – it was quite a trout. My mind wandered....If they are that big on the top what lies in the depths of that blockage?....

A notable thrill was the sudden, stout strike and subsequent battle of a truly beautiful 18 inch Brown. That beauty was unexpected but very much appreciated. A new season is beginning and with the amount of trout spotted and caught it looks very bright!

I found the trout today schooled up in pools and very eager to take scuds and nymphs. There were all age classes, nice egg laden females along with several large nicely colored fall run males brought to the net. The bite was consistent.
