Insect Hatching Activity: Midge and Terrestrials

The last day of the trout season is this coming Sunday. Fall fishing has been good and like other years, the season sure goes by quickly. This year was a bit different being we experienced a lack a rain throughout much of the summer, but the remarkable Driftless spring creeks continued flowing unabated with water temperatures that we fished never exceeding 65 degrees. Todays outing didn't disappoint as it was primarily scouting combined with some very enjoyable fishing. The start was quite chilly, but toward midday it warmed up into the 50's and with it some activity with midges and hoppers. I found the trout today schooled up in pools and very eager to take scuds and nymphs. There were all age classes, nice egg laden females along with several large nicely colored fall run males brought to the net. The bite was consistent. Another stream I scouted had pools loaded with trout but surrounded by high banks, stream debris and tight tree canopy presenting the ultimate fly fishing challenge. In one of the pools it was mesmerizing watching the trout interaction much like a large natural aquarium. The season is coming to an end with the streams and trout in excellent shape. Thank you to all the true sportsmen who came and shared this wonderful trout fishing in the Driftless area with us this year. Our times together truly are the "good ole days" in the making!

I observed the area and could see a faint ripple coming out of the foam. I still had the emerger on and made a cast to the area of the rise and was greeted by a resounding battle and eventually landed a beautiful 15” brown which I affectionately labeled the blue cheek fatty – it was quite a trout. My mind wandered....If they are that big on the top what lies in the depths of that blockage?....

A notable thrill was the sudden, stout strike and subsequent battle of a truly beautiful 18 inch Brown. That beauty was unexpected but very much appreciated. A new season is beginning and with the amount of trout spotted and caught it looks very bright!

One of the brookies was so full of food that there were insects coming up out of its mouth when I was unhooking it - it must of thought just one more scud isn't going to hurt anything.
