September is starting off where August ended. Today was a bit warmer and windier than Tuesday; however, the zeal for the hopper was every bit as strong. It’s an interesting hopper season as the trout sure love that big meal regardless of their size. They sure are keying on and looking for that delicacy. Interesting findings today were that we caught trout on long casts in 6″ of water; we caught trout on both sides of the stream; they loved the hopper up tight to bank; they loved the hopper riding in the foam coming into a pool; they loved the hopper that made a nice obvious “splat” on the water. The bottom line was to cover a stretch thoroughly, be a little unorthodox in your presentation and always be ready for the strike. Heaven knows we missed our share of strikes, but we also caught our share. Another extremely enjoyable day in the Driftless.
