We got a one-day break in the weather and made our way to the Iowa Driftless. Coming off some really chilly days, the water temperature was only 38 degrees at midday, but deeply presented nymphs and pupas brought some brightly colored trout to the net. All were caught in the deepest part of the runs. Spring creeks this time of year still flows steady with a darker bottom but noticeably absent is all the streamside life – a few birds, a lone duck and lots of silence. Except for the murmur of the stream. What a way to spend a day as I know many of you have experienced this wonderful simplicity. We fly fish for many reasons – the challenge of the catch, the flash of a trout, the beautiful markings of the trout, the environment where trout live and as today reminded us – the solitude.
