Insect Hatching Activity: Blue-Winged Olive, Midge, Caddis
Well, it is now November, but with the temperature in the 70’s the last few days, you would think that we are back in midseason. The only telling signs that we’re in Fall is the low sun in the sky and no leaves on the trees. The only green you see is the watercress and duck’s feet growing along the crystal-clear spring creek. This Fall fishing in Iowa has been nothing short of spectacular and today was no exception. Small nymphs and scuds presented drag free sure was the ticket. We were amazed at the amount of insect activity coming off the water; small tan caddis, blue wing olives, midges in their clusters and several larger mayflies that we weren’t able to identify. It is so interesting when your immersed in this spring fed waterworld environment witnessing all that’s going on around you. The trout were very accommodating – we switched to dry flies in the afternoon when the blue wing olives were coming off. but we really didn’t have to as they never stopped taking the nymphs. Aren’t choices like that nice?
