The nights are cool but the days have been warming up nicely. The hills and ridges of the Driftless are coloring up beautifully in their Fall adornment. What a wonderful time of year! Approaching the stream, we’re now seeing quite a few leaves in the water. In addition, the hoppers are still prevalent along the banks but not in numbers we saw earlier in the year. With the warm temperature and the mature grass now drapping from the bank into the stream gave a nice stream entry for the unfortunate hopper and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Hoppers paired with the midge dropper produced numerous hookups of wild stream bred browns. However, one anomaly today was a very healthy wild rainbow – we weren’t sure where that one came from but was quite a surprise. This was one of those days where many various presentations would catch trout and the decision was strictly personal preference. Stealth and accurate casts were obviously required but when done you were rewarded with many hook ups. Times like these are pretty special for sure.
